According to Daily Kos and MediaBistro, Fox News has cancelled “The Half Hour Comedy Hour,” its attempt to do a “right wing version” of The Daily Show (never mind that TDS makes ample fun of liberal politicians as well).
In the memo announcing the cancellation, FNC senior vice president Bill Shine says that the show “performed admirably in the ratings.” According to MediaBistro, “The first airing, February 18 was a hit, with more than 1.4 million viewers. The show averaged 258,000 viewers (25-54 demo) in its last 10 airings, winning its timeslot all but once.”
Now, I don’t know if “winning its timeslot” means “against all other shows,” “against all other cable shows,” “against all other cable news shows,” or “against all other right-wing alleged comedy shows.” But it seems odd that if the ratings were so allegedly good that FNC would cancel it. Then again, the reviews were horrific, and losing more than 82% of your audience from your premiere isn’t exactly a positive trend. So maybe things weren’t as rosy as Shine’s memo makes them appear.
Whatever the reason, there’s a lesson for all of us here: don’t let the ideology drive the funny, ’cause then you drown out all the funny. And I guess anyone looking for right-wing comedy on the Fox News Channel will be stuck watching…every other program on the Fox News Channel.
